Robin Pope has created a reputation second to none for his outstanding walking safaris, which enable Guests to experience Africa at its very best, and in the manner it should be experienced - on foot with an accomplished naturalist and an armed Game Scout.
WALKING
MOBILE SAFARIS have come to be known as THE
wilderness experience of the South Luangwa. The party
walks for 5 days covering approximately 10 km a day,
following the Mupamadzi River. This clear river is a
major tributary of the Luangwa. The area is remote and
wild, the terrain and habitats varied and the game shy
and unused to man. From ant's to buffalo, a bird's nest
to tracking a lion, you will learn the many facets of the
bush. The fully serviced mobile camp is extremely
comfortable and well equipped with walk-in tents and full
bedding. The shower is under a tree and the toilet is a
long drop with a wooden throne. Meals of a high standard
are served under the open sky. 
The Camp is moved after the 1st and 3rd
nights.
A maximum of six Guests participate in this walk, dates are available from mid-June to September. The Camps offer every comfort, but do not aim to be luxurious. Participents should be reasonably fit.
Walking Mobile and Tena Tena (9-12nights) Example itinerary:
Day 1
- arrive Mfuwe airport. Met by Nkwali staff and
transferred to Nkwali (1 hour) 3 nights at Nkwali Camp
Day 4 - after an early breakfast, head
north to the Mupamadzi River - some 90 kms along a bush
road, through the National Park. Arrive in camp for an
early lunch around midday. A short walk in the afternoon
around the camp and dinner under the stars!
Day 5 - up at sunrise for the morning
walk. The mobile camp will be pack and moved to Camp 2
and lunch will be ready as the guests arrive late
morning. Lunch, siesta and afternoon walk.
Day 6 - explore the area on foot -
returning to the same camp site.
Day 7 - the camp will be moved again, to
camp 3 during the morning as you walk further down the
river.
Day 8 - explore the area on foot -
returning to the same camp site.
Day 9 - after an early breakfast,
transfer to the Luangwa River, opposite Tena Tena. This
is a 4 to 5 hour transfer returning back down the same
road for the most part. Tena Tena staff will boat the
party across the river, and then a short 20 min drive to Tena Tena Camp. Lunch, siesta and
afternoon/night drive.
Day 10 - game viewing at Tena Tena Camp
Day 11 - game viewing at Tena Tena Camp
Day 12 - transfer to Mfuwe airport (1.5
hours).
For those with less time, or who are less energetic, Itineraries which comprise of just 2 to 5 days walking can be arranged.
Those wishing to experience walking safaris but with all the luxuries of life can be based at either Nkwali Camp or Tena Tena Camp, and go out on walking safaris during the day.
